Heron's Cove

Our second B&B is traditional style with the guests upstairs in several bedrooms and downstairs meals are prepared and served. The meals here were outstanding! Breakfast is included with the room each day but we also opted to eat our dinners at the restaurant each evening. Such delicious food -- mostly seafood -- and prepared and served with TLC.

On the farthest point of southwest Ireland, this pretty spot looks over a cove that empties completely at low tide and fills up to host boats at high tide. In summer this cove is full of anchored boats.
The floating balls are buoys reserved for specific boats to dock

I can't believe I walked all the way over there across that high bridge to the station! It was breathtakingly beautiful but a bit scary!

Barley Cove

Barley Cove is one of the prettiest beaches in all of Ireland. Near Mizen Head, it is sand dunes with gently sloping sandy beaches, full of wild life. Tradition says it was created by a tsunami in 1755 resulting from an earthquake in Portugal (estimated to be 8.4 on the Richter scale) of the magnitude similar the the Japanese tsunami in 2011 (a 9.0). Scientists now believe they have geologic evidence that backs up the long standing oral tradition. Link

Our little Kia Picanto

We were really glad we had a tiny car. The narrow country lanes were barely wide enough for one vehicle with no shoulder and frequently stone walls or living hedges on both sides. Meeting a car coming the other direction was nerve wracking!

Of all the photos we took, this one is the best! Laura caught it at just the right moment

Called The Rubber Duck this is the machine used to clean the vegetation growing into the road.
Once they scrape it all, resurfacing will commence

I love talking with these fellows working on the road. I don't think many American tourists come this way, or talk with the construction workers either! Ha! But I enjoy that and they shared about the work they do and how their equipment operates. They are proud of the job they do.

Crookhaven seafood chowder

We ate the best seafood chowder at a pub in Crookhaven. It was not a cream-based chowder but rather broth based but with a light tomato flavor and yummy chunks of shrimp, fish and veg.
